I have been busy searching the Internet for free 28mm 3D printable tanks and vehicles that I can use for my Western Desert armies. I found many, not only for the DAK, Italians and 8th Army but also for every other theater and period of WW2.
The ones you see above here took me about a week in total to print. Agreed, the quality is a bit less than metal, resin or plastic models and you can see printlines, unavoidable with the kind of hobby printer that I have, but I assure you that those are not visible on the wargames table once the model is painted. A bit of balsa wood or plasticard if necessary, some stowage and a commander figure where possible and you will have a hard time identifying these 3D printed models when placed next to my bought models. I do of course make sure that I print these in the exact same dimensions as my bought models and that helps too of course.
I do not have a bought model for the CM truck in the pictures so I cannot compare it scalewise. I have the impression that it is a bit large, what do you think?
The nice thing about 3D printed models is that they cost a fraction of the cost of metal, resin or even plastic models and that I can print them as many times as I like in whatever scale I want. I will print a lot more models in the next few weeks so keep an eye on this blog if you’re into this.
